Areas of Concentration

The graduate program in Forest Science, at Master's and Doctorate levels, counts with the participation of the Departments of Forest engineering , General Biology, Plant Biology, Rural Economy, Phytotechnics, IT, Chemistry and Soils. The student will join the Department of Forest Engineering, under the supervision of a Supervisory Committee. The Program has four basic areas of concentration, each covering several specializations: Forest Management (Measurement, Inventory and Management of Even and Uneven aged Forests; Policy, Economics, Administration, Planning, Forest Optimization, Ergonomics, Harvest, Roads and Forest Transport ; Remote Sensing and Geoprocessing); Silviculture (Seeds, Propagation and Physiology of Forest Species; Genetics and Forest Improvement; Silvicultural and Agroforestry Systems; Dendrology and Phytosociology) Technology and Use of Forest Products (Forest Products Technology, Cellulose and Paper; Energy and Forest Biomass) and Environment and Nature Conservation (Ecology, Hydrology, Integrated Management of Watersheds; Fauna Management and Conservation and Environmental Management Systems; Environmental Impacts and Recovery of Degraded Areas; Parks, Recreation and Urban Forests).

Areas of Concentration and Lines of Research

SILVICULTURE

01 – Seeds, Propagation and Physiology of Forest Species

Surveys and identification of forest species. Dormancy, storage and germination of forest seeds aiming to obtain basic information on their metabolism, as well as the mechanisms that control seed germination and dormancy.

02 – Genetics and Forest Improvement

Definition of genetic parameters and selection criteria for growth characteristics, nutritional efficiency and wood quality characteristics. Use of biochemical marker techniques applied to breeding.

03 – Silvicultural and Agroforestry Systems

Studies linked to the diagnosis and design of agroforestry systems, silvicultural systems of native and exotic species.

04 – Dendrology and Phytosociology

Survey of tree species in forest communities, phytosociological studies.

05 – Forestry Innovation

Work on innovation, technology transfer and intellectual property in the forestry area. Develop in companies and universities a culture of innovation, proactivity, entrepreneurship and work with startups focused on disruptive solutions for native and planted forests.

FOREST MANAGEMENT

10 – Measurement, Inventory and Management of Even and Uneven aged Forests

This line encompasses studies in the area of ​​dendrometry and forest measurement, forest growth, forest management and planning.

11 – Forest Policy, Economics, Administration, Planning and Optimization

Determination of the optimal cutting age, optimal level of fertilization and spacing, economic assessment of damage, economic location, assessment of product costs, economic and social assessments of reforestation and the forest sector.

12 – Ergonomics, Harvest, Roads and Forest Transport

Development of exploitation systems, optimization of system productivity and reduction of wood transport costs. Technical and economic study aimed at rationalization and safety at work.

13 – Remote Sensing and Geoprocessing

Development of software for automatic interpretation of orbital images to monitor the earth's vegetation cover establishment of database in geographic information systems

TECHNOLOGY AND USE OF FOREST PRODUCTS

20 – Forest Products Technology

It encompasses studies with the objective of determining the properties of wood and the effects of factors that affect the quality and use of wood. Determine the properties of composition sheets manufactured with raw materials.

21 – Pulp and Paper

Study of traditional processes and development of new pulping and bleaching processes; wood chemistry; pollution control in the cellulose and paper industries

22 – Forest Biomass Energy

Wood as a source of energy. Use of forest residues for energy production.

ENVIRONMENT AND NATURE CONSERVATION

30 – Ecology, Hydrology, Integrated Management of Watersheds, Management and Conservation of Fauna and Environmental Management Systems

Studies for the conservation of natural resources emphasizing water, soil and improvement of environmental management systems.

31 – Environmental Impacts and Recovery of Degraded Areas

Diagnosis and listing of environmental measures to mitigate forest impacts, techniques for recovering degraded areas.

32 – Parks, Recreation and Urban Forests

Parks and recreation; Studies of settlements, agglomerations and isolated trees within the urban context; sociological phyto-human relationship.
