On August 27, 2021, the ClimateLaunchpad 2021 national final for new green business took place. The startup Bioflore, formed by UFV students and alumni, was the winner, among more than 60 initiatives. Since the beginning of the competition, in July, the Bioflore team has undergone several trainings and mentorships to further improve its innovative idea of how to promote a regenerative and low-carbon economy in Brazil.

The proposal presented by Bioflore shows how reforestation initiatives against global climate change can, in parallel, contribute to improving the quality of life of rural producers, through environmental regularization and diversification of production on their properties.

Bioflore was created in 2017 on the initiative of Heitor Filpi and Valéria Silva, doctoral students in Applied Meteorology and Forestry Science, and Guttardo Pereira and Ícaro Plant, computer scientists. Its main objective is to develop technologies that align economic development, environmental conservation and the social impact that reforestation projects can bring to rural producers. The startup highlights the important contribution of Micromet (DeA/UFV’s Micrometeorology Research Group) coordinated by Profa. Hewlley Acioli, the GEEA (Study Group on Environmental Economics and Forest Management) and the Zero Carbon Program, led by Prof. Laércio Antonio Gonçalves Jacovine since its creation until this achievement.

In the year of its creation, the startup has already shown its potential, taking 3rd place in the Environmental Challenge promoted by WWF-Brasil. It also presented its innovative solutions at the AGU Fall Meeting 2019, the world’s largest international meeting of earth and space sciences, in San Francisco, California.

Now, Bioflore, together with Nibbler and Saveadd, will represent Brazil in the regional stage of the competition. Startups from Argentina, Barbados, Canada, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Suriname and Uruguay will also participate in this stage, on September 24th and 25th.
