ENF 797 – SEMINAR

RULES FOR SEMINAR PRESENTATION OF THE GRADUATE PROGRAM IN FOREST SCIENCE

The Coordinating Committee of the graduate Program in Forest Science, in accordance with the graduate Regulations of the Federal University of Viçosa, approved the following general rules for holding its seminars:

1.  All graduate students in Forest Science must present at least 1 (one) seminar if a Master's student and at least 2 (two) seminars if a PhD student, during their time at the Federal University of Viçosa (Department of Forest engineering). The seminar presented by the Master's student as well as the second seminar by the Doctoral student will necessarily cover the thesis subject.

2.  graduate students who have a technical subject that they deem to be of interest to Forest Science will be encouraged to contact the Coordination to establish a presentation date for the chosen topic .

a)  Before presentation, the subject must be assessed and receive a favorable opinion from the supervising professor and the seminar coordinator.

b)  This seminar is not mandatory and will not be subject to judgment.

3.  The Coordination of the Seminars will be carried out by a professor accredited to work in graduate Studies and appointed by the Coordinating Committee, with a term of office lasting 2 (two) years.

a)  The Coordinator may be represented, whenever necessary, by another accredited professor.

4.  The Coordinating Professor will be responsible for:

a)  Organize the schedule of seminars;

b)  Set the location, day and time of the presentation;

c)  Control the frequency;

d)  Introduce the speaker;

e)  Direct the questions, coordinating the time and duration of discussions;

f)  Carry out a critical analysis of each presentation, except the seminar referred to in item 2;

g)  Communicate the grade obtained to the graduate student and the Registration Service.

5.  The seminar presentation will be restricted to Graduate students, and may, on days when there are no graduate students scheduled, be given by professors from DEF, UFV or anyone invited to do so.

6.  Seminar constitutes a course subject, coded as ENF 797 – (2-0) I and II and included in the UFV General Catalog.

a)  This subject does not count for 02 (two) credits and is mandatory and its assessment is made by the concepts: S (satisfactory) and N (unsatisfactory).

b)  Attendance at seminars is mandatory in the first two semesters in which the student is enrolled in graduate studies.

c)  Graduate students who obtain grade N and/or attendance lower than 75% in the seminars scheduled for each semester will be considered failed:

♦ Graduate students who fail due to grade will be required to present a new seminar in accordance with the presentation scale, in no less than 7 (seven) days;

♦ Graduate students who fail due to lack of attendance will have to complete the course again in the subsequent semester;

7.  The time for the seminars will be fixed in advance, so that graduate students and professors can attend them without interfering with other activities, mainly classes.

8.  The seminar presentation date must be communicated to the Coordinator by the student at least 20 days in advance.

9.  The seminars referred to in item 1 (one) will only be presented upon delivery of a summary with the supervisor's approval (signature).

10.  The supervisor's presence at the supervisee's seminar is mandatory.

a)  In case of proven impediment, the student may be represented by a student advisor.

11.  The duration of the seminars may be 30 (thirty) minutes, with 20 (twenty) minutes for lectures and 10 for questions.

12.  When judging the seminars, the following topics will be observed: diction, grammar, dynamics, use of technical language, use of audiovisuals, time frame, awakened motivation, ability to answer questions, apparent knowledge of the subject, sequence and technical level.

13.  The evaluation will be carried out by the Seminar Coordinator, who may request assistance from a committee for evaluation, through concept, respecting the rules contained in the UFV General Catalog.

14.  Any omitted cases will be resolved by the Coordinator.

15.  These Standards will come into force on the date of their approval by the Coordinating Committee of the graduate Course in Forest Science.
